Steering damper service—does anyone actually do it?

OEM damper still feels smooth and has no visible leak, but it is several years old. Is this a replace-when-bad item for street use, or are people having them rebuilt on an interval?

Smooth is fast enough.

For a non-adjustable OEM unit I inspect the mounts and full stroke, then follow the service manual. Aftermarket rebuildable dampers usually have their own interval.

Mine faded so gradually I did not notice until trying a freshly serviced unit. A suspension shop changed the oil and the adjustment clicks became meaningful again.

    Smooth is fast enough.

Make sure cables and brake lines are not creating steering resistance before blaming the damper. Check with the front wheel unloaded.

    Street miles, track lessons.
